The Department of Anesthesia of Angeles University Foundation Medical Center prides itself as having premier anesthesia services in the region, not only because of the large number of available highly credentialed medical staff members, but also because of the availability of facilities for most of general and subspecialty procedures.
It provides utmost quality services and patient care in all aspects of anesthesia, including General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery Orthopedic Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Neurosurgery, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Organ Transplantation, Ophthalmology, Surgical Intensive Care as well as Acute and Chronic Pain Management.
The Department started with the founding of the hospital, and soon after inauguration, it was ready to serve the needs of the hospital surgical services. All of the seven pioneers were actually stockholders, which was then a requirement to have the privilege to practice at Angeles University Foundation Medical Center.Dr Ed Francisco was the first Chair of the Department, in 1990, and helped in developing the required policies for the Department operations. He was succeeded as Chair by Dr. Erlinda F Malonzo in 1999, who held the position until 2002. Dr. Francisco, resumed the chairmanship for until 2005, after which Dr. Grace Guinto-Enriquez held the position up to the present.
Right from start, Angeles University Foundation Medical Center was recognized as the most advanced tertiary level hospital north of Manila. Facilities were available for us anesthesiologists to render our services not only for the ‘run of the mill’ cases of obstetrics-gynecology, general surgery, orthopedic, ophthalmology, and ENT but those of pediatric including neonatal surgical cases as well.
Eventually, as technology progressed, more procedures were made available specifically minimally invasive surgery for both general surgery, thoracic, orthopedic and gynecologic cases , advanced GI endoscopy as well.
The past ten years saw the development of Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery, in parallel with the founding of the Heart Institute. Open heart surgery for coronary bypass and valvular replacement procedures are being done by the thoracic and cardiovascular anesthesiologists who are part of our staff, but the coronary angiography and angioplasty procedures are part of our non operating room anesthesia services for our general anesthesiologists.
Thanks to the Hospital President, Atty. Gabriel Martin L. Angeles and Dr. Rose Liquete, prominent Transplant Surgeon, Angeles University Foundation Medical Center has been the center for Kidney Transplantation north of Manila. The Kidney Transplant Team consists of active members of our department.
From a team of seven active medical staff in 1990, thirty years later, there are 37 Visiting Anesthesiologists and 13 Active Anesthesiologists. This full complement of anesthesiologists include formally trained sub specialists in such fields as: Neuroanesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, Critical Care, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Anesthesia and Pain Specialty.
With accredited residency training both in Obstetrics-Gynecology and General Surgery, the next challenge is for our department to establish its own residency training program in Anesthesia. A dream which is now within reach.
