Positron Emission Tomography (PET) identifies abnormal cellular processes by capturing radiation from tracers injected into the body. A CT Scan is then used to provide a detailed map of the abnormality. The fusion of these methods allows detection of most types of cancer with 90% to 95% accuracy.
Avoid physical exercise or any strenuous physical activity (e.g. jogging, running, brisk walking, swimming, lifting weights, aerobic exercise, zumba, etc.) at least 3 days before the scan.
Refrain from eating sugar-rich food or fruits (e.g. Mangoes, Guyabano, Banana, etc.) within three (3) days prior to your scheduled date.
On the day before your scan, a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet is recommended (if possible).
Fasting for six (6) hours is needed before your scheduled time. During this fasting period, the patient is allowed to take water for PLAIN STUDIES ONLY. Avoid fasting longer than necessary.
Do not take vitamins, cough syrup or food supplements during the fasting period. These can be taken after completion of the PET/CT study. Maintenance medications, except for those used to lower blood glucose (i.e. in the case of diabetics), may be taken while fasting.
If you are diabetic:
Eat a full meal before fasting.
Do not inject insulin while fasting.
If possible, do not take Metformin Two (2) days before the PET/CT scan. You may resume your Metformin after the completion of the PET/CT.
For patients who will be sedated during the scan:
Fasting for eight (8) hours is needed.
The patient should not be given any food or water while fasting.
Please bring the following on the day of your scan:
Doctor’s request for the PET/CT study;
Tumor markers; and
Official report and images (i.e. Films, cd or usb) of other diagnostic imaging studies (e.g. Ct, mri, pet/ct, etc.).
If contrast will be used in your PET/CT scan, make sure to bring your CREATININE result (i.e. within 2weeks before scheduled date of the study).
Inform our staff should you have any allergies to food, medication or CT contrast.
Should you cancel your PET/CT on your scheduled date, or should you fail to show up for your PET/CT study on your scheduled date, the corresponding amount for the PET radiopharmaceutical shall be forfeited.
Rescheduling/cancellation of PET/CT procedures shall be allowed at least two (2) days prior to the scheduled date.
RADIATION PRECAUTION: Kindly avoid close contact (i.e. less than one (1) meter distance) for more than 5 minutes from pregnant women and children below 13 years of age for 12 hours from the time the radiotracer has been injected.
